Liwonde National Park was regarded as one of the good bird watching area. Although the species diversity of birds in mopane woodland is not as high as that in brachystegia woodland, birds species of wetland, grassland, thicket and riverine habitats add interest.
The abundance and diversity of raptors was impressive, as 26 species were identified. Although little information on migratory raptors was available then, the Shire River may be a regular migration route. Of the park's raptors, three are perhaps rare in the African context; the martial eagle, the crowned eagle and Dickinson's kestrel.
