From the mid-18th century to the 19th century, navigating on the open ocean was an imprecise and often perilous undertaking. To calculate daily progress and avoid straying into uncharted waters, ship crews kept detailed logs containing data on wind conditions, waves, and any anomalous weather events. These rich datasets were recorded in handwritten ship logs. The main file of this dataset contains 280,280 observational records of ship position and weather data, along with other relevant information.
