Tennessee Wildfire Hazard Potential (Hexagon Grid) Overview This feature layer represents Wildfire Hazard Potential (WHP) across Tennessee using a statewide hexagonal grid system. The polygons in this dataset are 50-square-kilometer hexagon grids that provide a consistent spatial framework for identifying and analyzing areas where wildfire may be more difficult to manage. The data is derived from the USFS National Wildfire Hazard Potential dataset, produced by the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, with supporting wildfire hazard modeling from Pyrologix LLC. Wildfire Hazard Potential is an index that quantifies the relative potential for wildfire that may be difficult to manage and is commonly used to help prioritize where fuel treatments, mitigation efforts, and fire prevention strategies may be needed. This dataset is intended for use in wildfire risk assessment, forestry planning, fuel treatment prioritization, fire prevention planning, emergency management coordination, research, and public information purposes. It serves as a GIS reference layer for evaluating relative wildfire hazard patterns across Tennessee at a regional planning scale. Feature Layer WHP Hexagon Grids: This polygon layer represents 50-square-kilometer hexagon grid cells covering Tennessee. Each hexagon is associated with a Wildfire Hazard Potential classification and grid identification code. The layer provides a generalized spatial framework for analyzing relative wildfire hazard potential and supporting statewide wildfire planning, mitigation, and management activities. Data Attributes ClassCode: The Wildfire Hazard Potential classification assigned to the hexagon. Data Maintenance This layer is maintained by the TDF Forest Data and Analysis Unit. It is updated periodically as needed to reflect updated source data from the USFS National Wildfire Hazard Potential dataset, revised wildfire hazard modeling methods, improved source datasets, boundary refinements, or other administrative changes.
