The National Weather Service (NWS) uses a variety of techniques to forecast and detect severe thunderstorms and tornadoes; including RADAR, satellite, ground based and airborne spotters, and (with renewed interest) lightning detection (atmospherics - sferics) . During the 1950's, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) operated an experimental lightning network.
