The germline-restricted chromosome (GRC) of songbirds represents an extraordinary and taxonomically widespread example of programmed DNA elimination. We sequenced the testis and kidney of three individuals from 2 species, the common and thrush nightingale. This allowed for the comparison of these datasets in order to identify GRC sequences. These two species are closely related, and both have micro-GRCs.
