The Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) was designed to document the first third of galactic evolution from z = 8 to 1.5 via deep imaging of more than 250 comma 000 galaxies with WFC3-IR and ACS. It also discovered the first Type Ia SNe beyond z > 1.5 and established their accuracy as standard candles for cosmology. Five premier multi-wavelength sky regions were selected from the Spitzer Extragalactic Deep Survey (SEDS) to provide complementary IRAC imaging data down to 26.5 AB mag comma a unique resource for stellar masses at all redshifts. The use of five widely separated fields mitigated cosmic variance and yielded statistically robust and complete samples of galaxies down to 10elev9 solar masses out to z virgul 8. The original CANDELS ACS imaging included primarily V- and I-band (F606W and F814W) comma with no B-band observations. The two CANDELS-Deep fields already had moderately deep F435W imagery taken as part of the GOODS North and South programs (GO 9583 and 9425). None of the three CANDELS-Wide fields had pre-existing F435W coverage. The subsequent GO program UVCANDELS (GO 15647) obtained comparably deep F435W imagery across much of the CANDELS-EGS and CANDELS-COSMOS fields comma but did not target the CANDELS-UDS field. This program aims to rectify the missing B-band HST imagery in the CANDELS-UDS comma the only CANDELS field still lacking F435W. The 44 single-orbit visits of compact-dithered F435W pointings are identically matched to the legacy ACS-WFC CANDELS-UDS footprint comma resulting in a consistent HST legacy dataset of BVI imaging for the entire CANDELS Wide mosaic survey.
