The Water Drop Penetration Test (WDPT) method measured the hydrophobicity of the samples. One drop of distilled water (average volume = 0.023 mL) was placed on a smoothed ash sample surface in a 3.8 cm diameter ring mold. Samples sieved over the No. 100 sieve were used to measure hydrophobicity, and data was taken in triplicate. The DeBano (1981) qualifications for the time required for a water droplet to penetrate the soil surface were used to classify soil water repellency: (<6s: wettable; 6-60s: slightly water repellent; 60-600s: moderately water repellent).
