This statistic provides information on the origin of the population of the City of Brussels This origin statistic is based on the following characteristics: the current and first registered nationality of the person as well as the first registered nationality of the parents. These characteristics are available in the National Register of Natural Persons (RNPP) managed by the Inland FPS. The starting point for determining origin is the current nationality. If the person is not Belgian, the person falls into the ‘non-Belge’ category. If the current nationality is Belgian, we look second at the first registered nationality. If non-Belgian, the person belongs to the category “Belgian of foreign origin”. If the current nationality and the first registered nationality are Belgian then the first registered nationality of the parents shall be examined. If one or both parents have a first registered non-Belgian nationality, then the person belongs to the category “Belge of foreign origin”. Finally, persons who do not belong to any of the above categories are classified in the category ‘Belgian of Belgian origin’. Nationality is finally subdivided into four main categories: Belgian; Neighbouring countries, namely Germany, France, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom; EU27, with the exception of Belgium and neighbouring countries; Outside the EU27
