Our population genetic assessment of high-quality re-sequenced Arabidopsis lyrata species-complex throughout the Eurasian range reveals over 30 previously undescribed autotetraploid populations in Siberia with a minimum of two origins, independent of those previously reported from Central Europe. The establishment of Siberian tetraploids appears to be mediated by meiotic adaptation with similar genetic architecture to European tetraploid A. lyrata and Arabidopsis arenosa despite high levels of divergence and lack of geographical overlap. Haplotype analysis based on linked-short-read and long-read assemblies supports the long-range introgression of adaptive alleles from the tetraploid interspecific pool of European A. lyrata and A. arenosa to tetraploid Siberian A. lyrata. The most Eastern Siberian tetraploid A. lyrata lineage also shows signs of independent (pre)adaptation to tetraploidy. Overall, A. lyrata appears to be the richest species complex in polyploidy in Arabidopsis genus with multiple independent origins of autotetraploidy stabilised by polygenic meiotic adaptation.
