To assess the effects of the PPI omeprazole on magnesium (Mg2+) homeostasis and gut microbiota, C57BL/6J mice (males only, age five weeks) were treated daily with omeprazole for four weeks under normal or minimal dietary Mg2+ availability. Fecal pellets were collected as proxy for the gut. Multiplex Illumina MiSeq sequencing of V3 (341F) and V4 (785R) hyper-variable regions of bacterial 16S rRNA was used to define intestinal microbial communities.
