We found that applying vacuum to the area
surrounding the microneedle puncture sites encourages localized blood flow,
stretches the puncture sites open, and leads to substantially increased blood
flow rates. To optimize the level of vacuum used for blood collection, we
tested devices with -5, -12, and -20 inHg of vacuum, using a vacuum reservoir connected
to each device.
