In this work, we performed experimental evolution of E. coli strains with mutations in the essential tRNA methyltransferase gene trmD, in order to gain insight into the biological function of this gene and determine whether bacteria can evolve to tolerate loss of trmD. We performed next-generation sequencing on the evolved populations to determine the mechanisms for tolerance of TrmD deficiency.
