Species of Acinetobacter have been involved in various environmental (Bioremdiation) and biotechnological applications. Some strains of this genus are known to be involved in biodegradation of a various pollutants such as phenol, benzoate, amino acids (aniline), biphenyl and chlorinated biphenyl, crude oil, acetonitrile etc. Different genera of bacteria are known for their potential phenol degradation ability, however, substrate inhibition and low degradation rate has limited their applications.. Acinetobacter sp. V2 strain is able to degrade 400 ppm of phenol within 24 hrs. Acinetobacter strains apart from bioremediation are used for production of a number of extra-and-intracellular commercial products such as lipases, proteases, bio-emulsifiers and several kinds of biopolymers. Presence of commercially important proteins apart from its ability to degrade diesel and engine oil makes this organism unique and thus genome sequencing.
