Under Section 50 of the Land Act 1862, persons could lease land of no more than three acres for a period of up to seven years at an annual rental of no less than five pounds per acre. The land could be used for a wide range of miscellaneous purposes including quarrying, rural stores or inns, factories or tanneries or mills, ferries or punts or toll houses or for ship-building. In the same way, under Section 53 of the same Act, a licence could be issued for no more than one year to enter upon Crown Lands for these same purposes and to prospect, to remove useful resources, for the establishment and maintenance of drainage facilities, to occupy fishermen's huts and for the carrying out of other rural industries.This series contains the records of the few licences issued in the Horsham district for obtaining such things as wood and salt. Details given are the registry number, the name of the licensee, the description of the location of land to be occupied and the purpose of the occupation and the date, period and cost of the licence. Further details are given relating to licence payments. In the remarks column, details are given of later purchase of the land or the cessation of the licence.VPRS 15036/P1 was previously registered as VPRS 1316/P Unit 4. It was reserialised in 2005.
