<p>In 1904 the third modern Olympic Games were held in St. Louis in conjunction with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, or World's Fair. The majority of the competitors came from athletic clubs and associations, Y.M.C.A. teams, and Turnvereins based in the United States. A significant number of these participants were from Turnverein or Turner clubs. Turners were German-American gymnastic associations that had been active in the United States dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. The National Turnverein team was based in Newark, New Jersey and was among the many Turner groups that traveled to St. Louis to participate in the Olympics.</p>
<p>The 1904 Olympic National Turnverein Team Photograph Collection consists of one studio portrait of the New Jersey team wearing their uniforms and medals. The title printed below the image reads:"World's Olympic Championship Team of the National Turn Verein. St. Louis, 1904."</p>
