Perspectives of the growing together from the view of the citizens in
East and West Berlin. Attitudes to parties, political institutions and
organizations.
Topics: interest in politics; frequency of visits in the eastern or
western part of the city; political participation; attitude to
unconventional forms of political participation; self-classification on
a left-right continuum; postmaterialism; evaluation of personality
characteristics and political attitudes (scale); rank order of the most
important social organizations; membership in organizations and trade
unions; most important demands of this organization and personal
importance as well as effectiveness of the goals represented; party
closeness of the organization mentioned; judgement on the constitution
and reality of the constitution; trust in selected political
institutions; judgement on the turning point in the GDR; preference for
unification or continued existence of the two German states; conditions
of unification (scale); expected material disadvantages for West
Germans from unification; attitude to foreigners and national pride
(scale); most important political problems of Berlin; problem solving
abilities of the political parties; satisfaction with circle of
friends; conversation partner and topic in conversations about
politics; initiator of this topic; media relevance of the topic and
differences of opinion with conversation partner; political
classification of conversation partner on a left-right continuum;
general agreement with opinions of conversation partner and opinions of
social surroundings; attitude to repressions of the government against
the citizens (scale); most important sources of information about
politics; general length of watching television; frequency of watching
news broadcasts; conscious selection and concentrated watching of news
broadcasts; frequency of watching political broadcasts; cable
television; listening to the radio; frequency of listening to news
broadcasts; preferred radio station; subscription and frequency of
reading daily newspapers; preferred daily newspaper; reading the
political section, the local section or editorials; assessment of the
political orientation of the newspaper; judgement on the balance of
television reporting and perceived changes in recent time; assessment
of current and future economic situation; behavior at the polls in the
last election for the House of Representatives; future voting intent
and party preference; party liking and party identification; trust in
the honesty of political parties; region of origin and time of
mobility; employment in civil service; father in civil service; current
employment development at work; assessment of the risk to one´s job;
employment of partner; religiousness; residential status.
The following questions were also posed in the eastern part:
perception and judgement on the other part of the city; frequency of
trips to the other part of the city before and after the fall of the
wall; expectations of the process of democratization in the GDR;
judgement on the path of the GDR up to now; expected consequences of
the socially-oriented market economy for the GDR (scale); personal
consequences of the market economy for the respondent.
The following additional questions were posed in the western part:
naming the party about whose election advertising there was longer
discussion; justification of outrage about the commercial of the
Republicans; expected effect of the commercial on the election chances
of the Republicans.
Interviewer rating: reliability and willingness of respondent to
cooperate.
Also encoded was: type of sample; presence of third persons during
interview and their degree of relationship to respondent; interventions
in the interview; number of contact attempts; length of interview.
