Miscellaneous-Poetry This manuscript is now IO Islamic 1762 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, 2 vols. (Oxford: India Office, 1903): volume 1, number 1521 here with notations and hyperlinks]. 1762 Miscellanies. This MS., written by many different hands, contains a great number of complete and incomplete treatises, detached prose-pieces and fragments of poetry, all confusedly mixed together. The principal portions of this copy are as follows: 1.Extracts from the Shâhnâma (see No. 860 sq. above), beginning: بنام خداوند جان و خرد الخ. 2.A ساقى نامه, by Ṣidḳî (i.e. Sulṭân Muḥammad Ṣidḳî of Astarâbâd, a panegyrist of Shâh Ṭahmâsp, died A.H. 952), on fol. 10a, beginning: خوشا حال مستى كه منصور وار ميسّر شدش مستئ پايدار 3.Ghazals, by Ṣidḳî and ‘Urfî (died A.H. 999), on fol. 13a. 4.Fragment of an Inshâ, by Ghiyâth-aldîn bin Humâm, commonly called Khwândamîr, that is the famous author of the خلاصة الاخبار, the حبيب السّير, etc. (see Nos. 76-100 above), on fol. 18a, beginning: اى حمد تو ديباچۀ منشور كمال الخ. 5.Short extracts from Niżâmî’s mathnawîs (see Nos. 972-1027 above), ghazals by Ḥâfiż (see Nos. 1246-1274 above), a letter by Naṣîrâ of Hamadân (who was met by Taḳî Auḥadî in Shîrâz, A.H. 1015=A.D. 1606, 1607, see A. Sprenger, Catal., p. 512, and Rieu iii. p. 1093b) to the Wazîr of Iṣfahân, and various poetical specimens, especially mukhammasât, on fol. 24b. 6.Poems by Jalâl-aldîn Rûmî (see Nos. 1060-1115 above), Maulânâ Dakhlî (came from ‘Irâḳ to India under Akbar), Ḥâfiż, Khâḳânî (see Nos. 950-970 above), etc., on fol. 41a. 7.Extracts from Jalâl-aldîn Rûmî’s mathnawî, on fol. 50a. 8.A prose-piece, beginning: مرويست از امام جعفر صادق عليه السّلام كه هر كه سورۀ يسين را سه روز بر زعفران و گلاب نويسد الخ , and ghazals by different Persian poets, on fol. 51b. 9.A poetical description of Kashmîr, by Jân Ḳudsî (see Nos. 1552-1557 above), حاجى محمّد جان قدسى در تعريف كشمير, on fol. 62a, beginning: خوشا كشميرو خاك پاك كشمير الخ. Both from the initial bait and metre it is evident that this poem is different from the usual mathnawî in praise of Kashmîr, see No. 1552, 4. 10.Ghazals, by Maulânâ Ḥashrî, Shaikh Abû-alḳâsim, Ḥakîm Ruknâ (died A.H. 1066), Amîr Khusrau (died A.H. 725), Abû Ṭâlib Kalîm (died A.H. 1062), Maḥsharî (teacher of Mullâ Nażîrî of Nîshâpûr, who died A.H. 1021, see No. 1489 above), Shaikh Bû ‘Alî, Aḳdasî of Mashhad (died A.H. 1003), etc., a فائدۀ ده پند ديگر كه از قول بوزرجمهر حكيم , and few ḳiṭ’as and rubâ’îs, on fol. 64a. 11.A short story (حكايت), a few verses, a prescription جهت قوّة باه, and a محلوق (مخلوق) نامۀ پيغمبر on fol. 67a. 12.Another collection of Persian, poems by Sa’dî (died A.H. 690), Shâh Ḳâsim, Ahlî (of Shirâz, died A.H. 942), Waḥshî (died A.H. 991 or 992), Amîr Khusrau, etc., on fol. 70a. 13.از منشآت ارسطاطاليس حكيم, in verse, beginning: بدان اى خردمند نيكو سير الخ ; followed by ghazals of ‘Urfî, Shâhî (died A.H. 857), etc., and a series of fards, on fol. 73a. 14.Poems by Ḳâsim (probably Ḳâsim-i-Anwâr, who died A.H. 837), extracts from Jâmî’s سلسلة الذّهب (composed A.H. 890, see No. 1300, 9 above), ghazals by Kâtibi (died A.H. 838 or 839), Kamâl (Khujandî, died A.H. 803), etc., and a Turkish poem by Âyâzî (آيازى), on fol. 83a. 15.Selections from the لطائف الطّوائف, by ‘Alî bin Ḥusain alwâ’iż (see Nos. 778 and 779 above), arranged in a somewhat puzzling manner. There appears a fifth faṣl on the first page, fol. 88a, در ذكر بعضى از فوائد انفاس امام محمّد باقر ; a sixth on fol. 88b, در ذكر بعضى نكات لطيفۀ امام جعفر صادق ; a seventh on fol. 89a, در ذكر شمّۀ از انفاس متبرّكۀ امام موسى الكاظم ; then follows a second on fol. 89b, در لطائف شعرا نسبت توانگران و بخيلان ; after that a ninth on fol. 90a, در لطائف متفرّقۀ ظرفا ; and an eighth on the same page, در لطائف ظرفا باعراب ; again a seventh occurs on fol. 92b, در بديهه گفتن شعرا با يكديگر ; a third on fol. 93a, در ذكر بعضى از كلمات شريفۀ امام حسين ; again an eighth on fol. 93b, در بديهه كه عرفا و شعرا در وقت وفات گفته ; again a seventh on fol. 94a, در دين دارى و مسلمانئ پادشاهان ; and again a second on fol. 94b, در لطائف و فوائد حكماء متأخّرين. 16.The three prose-treatises by Żuhûrî (see No. 1509 sq. above). Viz. (a) Preface to the نورس , beginning: سرود سرايان الخ, on fol. 96a; (b) Preface to the گلزار ابراهيم, beginning: خرّمى چمن الخ, on fol. 98a; (c) Preface to the خوان خليل, beginning: اى از تو الخ, on fol. 101a. 17.Ghazals, by Ṣâ’ib (died A.H. 1088), Ḳâsim-i-Anwâr, etc., on fol. 104a. 18.Story of Buzurjmihr and Aristotle (!), on fol. 115b, beginning: الحمد لله .... آورده اند كه روزى نوشيروان عادل بخواجه بوزرجمهر حكيم الخ. It is a tract, similar to, if not identical with the ظفرنامۀ بزرجمهر , published by Schefer in his Chrest. Persane i. pp. ١-٦, comp. also Bodleian Cat., col. 765, No. 43. Dated at Daulatâbâd the 3rd of Muḥarram, A.H. 1175 (A.D. 1761, Aug. 4). 19.Poems by Shâh Ni’mat-allâh Walî (died A.H. 834), on fol. 120a. 20.اسناد فاتحۀ باژگونه , on fol. 121a, beginning: روايت ميكند از امير المؤمنين عثمان الخ. 21.Bread and sweatmeat (نان و حلوا), the well-known mathnawî by Bahâ-aldîn Muḥammad ‘Âmilî (died A.H. 1030), on fol. 122a, beginning: مرحبا اى بلبل دستان حى الخ , see Nos. 1517-1520 above. 22.A story, beginning: درويشى بدر خانۀ بازرگانى رسيد الخ, on fol. 125a. 23.An ethical treatise in forty bâbs, entitled تحفة السّلاطين, on fol. 126a, beginning: الحمد لله ..... امّا بعد بدانكه اين رسالۀ تحفة السّلاطين مبوّب بر چهل بابست و در هر بابى چهار نصيحت باب ا در آنكه چهار چيز پادشاهانرا نگاهدارد اوّل رعايت و محافظت الخ. It is identical with the رسالۀ تحفة الملوك , described in Bodleian Cat., col. 765, No. 45. 24.An astronomical treatise in verse by Khwâjah Naṣîr of Ṭûs (در دانستن آن كه ماه در كدام برج است), on fol. 128a; Naṣîr-aldîn of Ṭûs, the great philosopher and astronomer, died A.H. 672 (A.D. 1273, 1274). 25.A treatise on pearls, jewels, and precious stones, on fol. 129b, beginning : فهرست ابواب در معرفت جواهر و فائدۀ آن باب اوّل در معرفت مرواريد الخ. In twenty one bâbs (not twenty, as the fihrist states). 26.Another treatise, styled: كلمۀ چند در بيان حليۀ , صورت ظاهر انسان و شكل و شمائل و اعضا و جوارح ايشان, on fol. 136a. 27.Metaphysical and psychological tracts in various fuṣûl; the first faṣl is styled: در تمهيد معذرت جهت قصور ادراك و عبادت on fol. 138a. 28.A treatise on the horse, said to have been translated from Aristotle, in thirty bâbs (در معرفت انواع اسپان و هنر آن و الوان و افعال و علّت و دفع علّت ايشان الخ ), on fol. 142b followed by miscellaneous verses, a pros-fragment, and rubâ’îs. 29.Fragment of the first volume of Mirkhwând’s universal history, on fol. 150a. Title: تاريخ روضة الصّفا فى شرف الانبيا, see Nos. 24-75 in this Cat. 30.در خواصّ اسما و آيات, a large treatise on the hidden science and magic influence of special verses and phrases of the Ḳurân, translated from Arabic sources by ‘Abd-al’alî bin Ḥusain, A.H. 926 (A.D. 1520), on fol. 213b, beginning: الحمد لله الّذى انزل القرآن على عبده ليكون للعالمين نذيراً الخ. 31.Durr-almajâlis (دٌرّ المجالس), a collection of legends relating to the Patriarchs, Prophets, Muḥammad, ‘Alî, and various Saints, by Saif al-Żafar Naubahârî, in thirty-three chapters, on fol. 293b, beginning : حمدى كه از عنايت الهى بر زبان الخ ; comp. Rieu i. p. 44; J. Aumer, p. 58; G. Flügel iii. p. 444; Cat. Codd. Or. Lugd. Bat. i. p. 359; W. Pertsch, Berlin Cat., p. 980, etc. 32.A poem by Ḥaidar (i.e. Ḥaidar Kulûć or Kulîćapaz, died A.H. 959), and various prose-fragments, among which an incomplete treatise on similar topics as No. 30, styled شرح ردّ سحر صحيح و مجرّب , and beginning on fol. 357b: روايت است كه روزى شخص پيش خواجه رشيد رحمة الله عليه آمد الخ. The right order of the leaves of this treatise is: fol. 357b, 351a-355b. On the fly-leaves in the beginning of the MS. there are also some scattered prose-fragments. No. 1521, ff. 357; written in many different styles of Nasta’lîḳ; size, 123/8 in. by 71 in.
