Biodiversity and climate impact assessment of a national transportation system

This repository includes supplementary material for a paper by Leppilampi, V., Kotiaho, J.S, Baumeister, S., Järvinen, E & El Geneidy, S. (2026). "Global biodiversity impact spillovers of national transportation systems" (Preprint). In the paper (Leppilampi et al., 2026) the biodiversity and carbon impacts of the Finnish transportation system were assessed by applying the BIOVALENT method (El Geneidy et al., 2026). LC-IMPACT (Verones et al., 2020) and ecoivent database were used for assessing the environmental impacts. Unit The biodiversity impact of transportation system activities is measured as Biodiversity equivalent, BDe. It is based on the potentially disappeared fraction of species (PDF). BDe represents the spatially explicit potential global loss of species across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. BDe values range from 0 to 1, where 0 indicates no risk of extinction and 1 indicates that the share of global species in the risk of extinction is 100 %. The climate impact of transprotation system activities is measured as Carbon dioxide equivalent. Contents of the dataset 20260516_Data_availability.xlsx - includes the data references of the datasets used in the paper, detailed description of the chosen variables from the datasets as well as links for accessing the datasets. BiodiversityandClimateImpactAssessment_theFinnishTransportationSystem.zip - includes detailed calculations, compiled total biodiversity and carbon footprint of the Finnish transportation system, impact factors used in the assessment and traffic volume data used and processed for the assessment.
