Current health expenditure amounted to EUR 240 billion in 2011, representing 12 % of gross domestic product (GDP). The consumption of medical care and goods (CSBM), which accounts for three quarters, reached 180 billion euros. It grew slightly faster than in the previous year (2.7 % in 2011 after 2.5 % in 2010), but at a slower pace than in 2009 (3.3 %). Its share of GDP is 9 % after 9.1 % in 2010. In terms of volume, the CSBM increased by 2.8 % in 2011, as in 2010. The average price of the CSBM fell slightly for the second consecutive year: —0.1 % in 2011 after -0.3 % in 2010. The decline in the price of hospital care and medicines has offset the rise in the price of city care. In 2011, the share of the CSBM financed by the Social Security is 75.5 %, the share covered by the complementary bodies is 13.7 %. The rest of the household burden has been 9.6 % since 2009.
