Final report : Maryland oyster reef restoration - 1998

The Maryland Oyster Reef Restoration Project 1998 was initiated in September 1998 by the Shellfish Division of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The objectives of the project were to demonstrate the economic and biological effectiveness of restoring naturally existing 3-dimensional oyster bottom by planting a veneer of shell rather than creating the relief by building piles made entirely of shell; to populate the restored sites by seed oyster plantings and natural spat set, if it occurred on site; and to attract participation by other oyster restoration groups in Maryland via the planting of seed oysters. The sites restored by this grant were located within oyster sanctuaries in order to develop long term, permanently protected oyster populations and reef communities. One sanctuary is in the Choptank River at Cambridge, Maryland and the other is in the Severn River at Annapolis, Maryland. Grant no. NA86FU0526
