Pitaya (Hylocereus undatus), which had unique appearance and attractive flavor, considerable content of Betacyanins, high resistance to oxidation, cancer-preventing effects, and high tolerance to extremely drought stress, was considered to be the preferably commercial fruit crop for regions seriously stricken by drought stress. Previously, an excellent pitaya genotype, 'Zihonglong', was obtained, which demonstrated superior tolerance to drought stress and good fruit quality in spite of no obvious difference with other genotypes in the morphological and anatomical structure of succulent stem, which make it an ideal material to illustrate the molecular mechanism of drought tolerance and mine drought-responsive genes. Although, many drought-related miRNAs were discovered in other plants, there is no study on genome-wide drought-responsive miRNA identification in pitaya.
