Despite their similarity with common polyelectrolytes and double hydrophilic block copolymers1 no studies investigate the self-assembly behaviour of amphiphilic block copolymers bearing sparse charged groups in the hydrophilic block and a thermoresponsive hydrophilic block (Figure 1 a). Such block copolymers are interesting because by controlling the balance of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions we expect to obtain a rich self-assembly behaviour in solution. Preliminary experiments confirm this hypothesis and suggest that the self-assembly behaviour of these copolymers is strictly dependent on the concentration and type of counterion that is added in their aqueous solutions. Varying this parameter, different mesoscale and nanoscale assemblies seem to form. Temperature variations might yield an even richer behaviour due to the responsiveness of the hydrophilic blocks.
