Share of smokers considering heated tobacco use Japan 2019

The majority of smokers in Japan, around 56.6 percent, were considering the use of heated tobacco products in Japan following the amendments on passive smoking regulations in the Health Promotion Act, as revealed by a survey conducted in December 2019. While e-cigarettes are outlawed in the country, heated tobacco or tobacco vapor products are considered a legal alternative to cigarettes.The amendments to the Health Promotion Act in Japan started in July 2018 and was scheduled to be completed by April 2020 prior to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The bill prohibits smoking in public facilities, offices as well as most restaurants and public areas.
