Replication Data for: An assessment of the khat and vegetable trade in the local economic ecosystem: The case of northern Madagascar

This dataset contains the quantitative data underlying the analyses presented in the study “An assessment of the khat and vegetable trade in the local economic ecosystem: The case of northern Madagascar.” The purpose of the dataset is to document and compare the economic performance of khat and vegetable trading activities, as well as their contribution to municipal revenues and local economic development in northern Madagascar. The dataset includes daily income diaries collected from khat and vegetable sellers operating in the city of Diego-Suarez during two agricultural seasons (dry and rainy seasons). These diaries record key economic variables such as daily income and wholesale price, allowing for the analysis of income levels, price dynamics, and seasonal variations. In addition, the dataset includes aggregated municipal financial data from two major khat-producing municipalities, Joffre-ville and Antsalaka, covering the period 2019–2023. These data summarize annual khat-related tax revenues and are used to examine the role of khat taxation in municipal finance and local development.
