Tree heights, diameters, and ages: Chena River successional sites 1965-2004

This long-term study documents vegetation characteristics along a primary successional sequence on the Chena River in interior Alaska. In this study, tree diameters, heights, and ages were measured in five forest stands: willow, balsam poplar, white spruce, mixed white and black spruce, and black spruce/sphagnum. Individual trees were tagged and measured every 4 to 10 years over a period of 39 years, with sampling in 1965, 1969, 1973, 1979, 1984, 1994, and 2004. Individual tree mortality and tree condition (topped, leaning, wounds, etc.) was also recorded. Newly established trees were tagged and measured as they reached breast height.>
