With a view to further understanding what controls productivity in the Ross Sea and elucidating sources of iron to Ross Sea waters, the multidisciplinary Slocum Enhanced Adaptive Fe Algal Research in the Ross Sea (SEAFAReRS) project was conducted in the Austral summer of 2011. An underlying hypothesis was that iron rich Modified Circumpolar Deep Water (MCDW) incursions bathe the Ross Sea Continental Shelf to stimulate phytoplankton growth in this high nutrient region. As part of the biological component of this project, we aimed to characterize the baseline protistan community at various locations and responses to iron and iron-siderophore enrichment by sequencing the V7-9 region of 18S SSU rRNA genes.
