Pathyris Topography Database

Pathyris Topography Database (Data Export) This dataset contains an export of the records included in the Pathyris Topography Database, a research database created within the Ptolemaic Pathyris Project: Interdisciplinary Research on the Urban Layout and Domestic Architecture of the Town (NCN Polonez Bis 2, 2022/45/P/HS3/01807). The database was developed to collect, systematise, and analyse topographical and architectural information preserved in Greek and Demotic documentary sources originating from the Ptolemaic town of Pathyris (modern Gebelein, Upper Egypt). By bringing together dispersed information preserved in individual texts, it provides a tool for reconstructing the urban landscape, architecture, and spatial organisation of the town during the Ptolemaic period. The dataset focuses exclusively on locations situated within the urban area enclosed by the town’s peristasis. It includes references to urban quarters, streets, houses, priests’ houses, vacant plots, pigeon houses, palm groves, the temple precinct, the fortress, walls, and other topographical features attested in the documentary record. The data were collected through a systematic examination of more than 1,500 texts associated with Pathyris (Gebelein). Following a multi-stage selection process, 82 documents containing relevant topographical information were identified. Every individual reference to a specific location, property, or landmark was entered as a separate database record, resulting in a dataset comprising 374 records. Each record includes information on the source document, date, language, location within Pathyris, original Greek or Demotic terminology, English translation, category of topographical feature, additional notes, tags, creator, and the dates of record creation and modification. The database is closely integrated with the Trismegistos platform through stable identifiers and links to Trismegistos Texts, People, Places, and Archives whenever available. The files deposited in this repository contain the complete dataset in machine-readable formats (CSV and Excel), enabling reuse, analysis, and integration with other digital humanities and archaeological datasets.
