Gapminder Dataset - Plotting and Programming in Python

This Gapminder dataset has long been a cornerstone of introductory Python programming lessons, particularly within The Carpentries' curriculum. Traditionally, learners download the dataset as a ZIP file before analyzing it in Python. However, to foster best practices in research data management and computational reproducibility, we are making this dataset available through Zenodo, a generalist data repository. By hosting the dataset in Zenodo, we enable learners to retrieve it programmatically via APIs, aligning with modern workflows that emphasize direct access to structured, versioned, and persistent research data.

This initiative is part of the Generalist Repository Ecosystem Initiative (GREI), an NIH-funded effort to raise awareness of how researchers can effectively use generalist repositories for depositing and accessing data. By integrating generalist repos into Python-based data workflows, we not only provide a seamless experience for The Carpentries learners but also encourage researchers at all levels to engage with repositories as part of their data-driven research practices.
