Instituto Antartico Argentino Antarctic Data Base describes about
1,100 samples of calcareous nanoplankton from Antarctica (Larsen Basin)
and South America (southernmost Patagonia). A bioestratigraphical zonation
about Campanian-Maestrichtian and Paleocene of Larsen Basin is in progress
coordinated with foraminiferal biostratigraphy. Using calcareous nannofossils,
forams and diatoms, it is elaborating an evolutionary scheme describing
paleoceanographic conditions during the Upper Cretaceous in the Larsen Basin.
A particular investigation is carried out about the K/T boundary with special
interest in glaucony, condensed sequences, and biostratigraphical events
around the boundary. Lately, all the investigations about the K/T boundary of
Patagonia and Antarctica were conducted in the ETH-Zentrum (Switzerland), and
University of Salamanca (Spain). Special cooperation programs with Florida
State Univ. (Tallahassee, USA) are being planned.
