Private households

Total number of households as of 2007 as at 31.12. Private households include persons or groups of persons who are each registered at the same residence address. This includes persons who are registered with both primary and secondary residence in Essen (= less than 300). For the purpose of determining the number of households in Essen since 2003, the reported inhabitants have been generated on the basis of characteristic comparisons with private households. For this purpose, facts are used, such as ramifications between spouses and between children and their parents, name matches in the field of family, birth and former surnames, same previous residence address and the same date of registration at the current residence address, as well as demographic characteristic constellations regarding age, gender, marital status and nationality, which suggest or exclude certain family relationships in connection with other indications. Persons without their own household management (“persons in institutions”) do not belong to private households.
