Project Description The main focus of this project was to use data collected by the SHRP 2 Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) to investigate driver behavior on congested freeways, particularly whether or not driver distraction is a cause of rear-ending crashes. The starting point is the observation that, in a platoon of closely-following vehicles, drivers who take longer to react to braking by a leading vehicle also need to brake at higher deceleration, which in turn limits the range of actions available to following drivers. Data Request Scope The dataset contains de-identified time-series data, forward video, and rear video that were collected as part of the SHRP 2 NDS and used to estimate braking reaction times in a sample of braking to stop events on freeways (the reaction times are not included in the dataset). Data Specification The events included in the dataset are those where a subject vehicle was traveling on a freeway, and where the driver braked to a stop. For each event, approximately 60 seconds before and 60 seconds after the initiation of braking were included. The dataset includes: Time-series of range and range-rate measurements from the subject vehicle's forward radar (non-processed) Time-series of GPS position on the freeway Time-series of speed, acceleration, heading, brake pedal press Video of view in front of the subject vehicle from the forward-facing camera Video of view behind the subject vehicle from the rear-facing camera The dataset includes 282 sets of event files (a triad of csv file with time series data, forward video file, and rear video file), a data dictionary, and a "Sample Export" folder with an additional 37 sets of event files.
