A total number of 500 English students produced an essay in courses related to L2 Writing. The sample consisted of 349 female (69.8%) and 151 male (30.2%) students who ranged in ages between 19 and 58 years (M = 24.89 years, SD = 6.30). Four raters were recruited to mark the essays. The essays were marked using a diagnostic assessment scale called the Empirically-derived Descriptor-based Diagnostic (EDD) checklist (Kim, 2011) accompanied by detailed guidelines. It was developed for scoring and describing the writing of non-native English-speaking students in an academic context. The EDD checklist consists of 35 dichotomous (Yes, No) descriptors assessing five writing attributes.
