Three samples were collected and submitted for pollen analysis from sediments from Cueva
Encantada in northeastern Mexico. A travertine layer, as well as sediments above and below the
travertine layer were sampled. These samples were examined in an effort to obtain information
concerning local vegetation and to provide any information concerning drastic differences noted in
preservation above and below the travertine. Fibers were abundant in the cave and restricted to
deposits in 60 cm of dry ashy cave fill. Beneath this level, no fibers were recovered, although stone
tools were present. The travertine layer apparently dates between 4500 and 5500 years ago.
