The mitochondrial genome of Emiliania huxleyi has been completely sequenced. It is a circular molecule of 29,013 bp. The genetic information is densely packed, with 78% of sequence specifying genes. All the genes are encoded on the same strand suggesting that the genome is transcribed in one unit. A unique feature of the mtDNA of E. huxleyi is the presence of the dam gene, which codes for DNA adenine methyltransferase (A-Mtase). This gene has not been reported for any mitochondrial genome studied so far.
