NRS-21531 | Personnel Leave Cards and Index Cards - Dredge Service, Newcastle [NSW Public Works and Services]

The records in this series consists of Employee Salary and Leave Record cards of the empoyees of the Dredge Service, Newcastle. Located at the beginning of the Personnel Leave Cards are the index cards which are arranged alphabetically. They index cards record the employee's number, their family and given names, residential address, date of birth, and the dates of when the leave started and finished.  Some of the cards are annotated.These are then followed by the Personnel Leave Cards . These cards document the employee's number, family and given name, residential address, date and place of birth, whether a returned soldier, gender, number of dependants, work number, district or work, classification, date started, and the type of leave taken. A new card is started for each year and data recorded on both sides.The Dredge Service operated primarily from Newcastle c.1875 until the last dredge was sold in 1976/78. Many NSW rivers were subject to siltation, flooding, and bars at their entrances. The dredges were employed to keep the river entrances open for coastal shipping, punts and flood mitigation.
