A process is proposed for the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with: i. a feeding phase of a cellulosic raw material， such as native vegetable fibers or biomass materials or by-products of the textile and paper industry， ii. a phase of contacting the cellulosic raw material with an oxidizing acid component at high temperature to produce cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and iii. a phase of recovery of the cellulose nanocrystals obtained， in which process an oxidative hydrolytic microwave assisted treatment is foreseen， with a closed microwave reactor under pressurized conditions. The obtained nanocrystals can advantageously form castable suspensions， for example as a thin and functional coating on the activated surface of flexible packaging materials.
