The purpose of this study was to use whole metagenomic shotgun sequencing to characterize the pulmonary bacteria in intubated patients with possible ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). The results of the shotgun sequencing were compared to the microbiological results obtained by standard culture in order to evaluate the ability of shotgun sequencing to produce the same diagnosis as the culture.
