An unprecedented Lingulodinium polyedra bloom developed from southern Baja California to the Santa Barbara Channel in April-May 2020. The L. polyedra strain native to coastal California is known to produce low levels of a toxic di-sulfated polyether named yessotoxin (YTX). Biotic factors triggering the production of YTX were investigated through 18S rRNA gene identification applied to the entire eukaryotic phytoplankton community.
