Characterization of the airway microbiome in healthy horses and horses with recurrent airway obstruction

Heaves, or recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), is a common medical condition of horses that can affect both performance and welfare, and in severe cases may be career-ending. Although the exact etiology and pathophysiology of heaves are incompletely understood, individual susceptibility and environmental challenge are thought to be of major importance. Investigation of airway microbiota and their potential role in the development of disease, as well as their significance for treatment strategies, deserve further attention.
