This project contains the first complete genome of Apis mellifera carnica from its native country of origin, Republic of Slovenia. The complete genome of this subspecies will contribute to comparative analyses of genome biology, to evolutionary studies within the C lineage of Apis mellifera, and to facilitating the investigation of mechanisms underlying its adaptation to the environment. Since Apis mellifera carnica is under legal protection in Slovenia, the genetic background will make an important contribution to its protection and conservation. The sequenced drone pupa was obtained from a colony managed by a Slovenian beekeeper and queen bee breeder operating within the framework of a government-sponsored breeding program for the Carniolan Honey bee.
