Environmental Information Explorer

The Environmental Information Explorer (EI Explorer) provides access to information about environmental monitoring sites owned and managed by over 90 organisations across Australia. The portal allows you to identify where environmental monitoring sites are located (for example stream gauges or weather stations), what observations and measurements are taken there and who owns and operates the site. There are more than 15,000 surface water sites and more than 22,000 meteorological sites.

The catalogue called Water Resources Stations represents a major update on a dataset first prepared in 2000. The catalogue principally contains information about monitoring sites that measure the quality and quantity of water in surface water features, particularly rivers and water storages, and rainfall and evaporation at meteorological stations. Site information was supplied to the Bureau of Meteorology by water management authorities in each state and territory. To this the Bureau added the sites that make up its weather and climate-observing network.
