Dataset : Movements in the port of Nouméa between 1862 and 1873

These datasets are based on a serialization of the monthly “Port movements” section of the Bulletin officiel de la Nouvelle-Calédonie (Archive 1). Between 1853 and 1907, this publication by the Government Printing Office brought together all the colony's official texts and, for the period 1862-1872, the monthly port movements. These datasets provides a detailed view of 2 272 individual ship movements and 2 781 recorded port calls to and from New Caledonia between 1862 and 1873, with 10 variables. The dataset has been enriched by the “consignee” column, supplemented by information collected by Dorothy Shineberg and by research in Australian periodicals We have added harmonized ISO country codes for nationalities. Geocoding was carried out using geographical directories and historical maps. There are two linked tables: a main register of voyages (port_movement_1862_1873), including ship characteristics, cargo, origin and destination and a relational (ship_trajectories_1862_1873), with geolocated port calls labeled as from or to, allowing reconstruction of maritime routes across the South Pacific. Ship types had been translated from French naval lexicon to English Port_movements and port_trajectories can be linked via the id field.
