资源简介:
This series comprises cards recording the results of chemical analyses and examinations of various geological samples collected by the Geological Survey of Victoria (VA 4118). Samples were predominantly collected within Victoria, however some were collected interstate, as well as from Antarctic expeditions in the early twentieth century. Further research is needed to determine the purpose for these records, however it’s likely they were references for use in comparative analyses or research. The samples appear to have been collected by geologists, who sent them to the Head Office of the Mines Department (VA 612) with relevant correspondence identifying the field number assigned to the sample, the locality of collection, date, and any remarks – for example, if the specimen was to be assayed, analysed, or sliced. From the Head Office they were forwarded on to be sliced or undergo examination and analysis by the Department laboratory. Various samples were also numbered and sent to the Geological Museum, operated by the Mines Department from 1909 until 1965, which housed a large collection of rocks and minerals from around Victoria for use in research and teaching. Some specimens were also added to the collections of the National Museum of Victoria (VA 431). Each card contains varying amounts of information but all include name of the sample type and the location the sample was collected from. Often the analyst and collector are named, as well as the assay number, slice number, grade, and the results of analysis. Most cards reference a publication corresponding directly to a related text in which the analysis or sample was used or described, such as a report, memoir, bulletin, annual report, or catalogue published by the Geological Survey. The cards also include a section for ‘Remarks’, which may include petrographic descriptions, method used for analysis, or commentary on past analyses—some note that the initial analysis was incorrect and provide an alternative. Where samples had been sent from the Geological Museum to be analysed, their museum number is also recorded. The cards themselves are not dated, but most reference samples, analyses and publications dated from c.1868-1968. Some cards appear to have been filled out and edited by multiple people over time and there are a few instances of apparently related correspondence, notes, references, or other information included with the cards. Where a card lists an assay number with a year, this may be cross-referenced with the year and assay number of reports within VPRS 19143 Assay Reports, VPRS 19302 Assay Registers, and VPRS 19309 Laboratory Register of Analysis.
