AI Buildout Frontier · Data centers of the world: records of the Atlas of Data Center Politics and AI data centers of Epoch AI, with places and counts by country · v0.1.0

Data centers of the world as two open sources list them, published by the AI Buildout Frontier Observatory (https://aibuildoutfrontier.org). Each layer is named after its source: 9,865 data-center records of the Atlas of Data Center Politics (Infrastructure Lab, National University of Singapore, version 0.1.0, data updated 8 October 2026), copied from its national tables for all 126 countries and territories it lists, with name, operator, status, start year and size class; the same records counted for each of the 242 countries and territories of abf-boundaries v0.2.0, by status and size class; the 94 AI data-center sites of Epoch AI ("AI data centers", file of 12 October 2026), with owner, users, current IT power, compute in H100 equivalents and capital cost. The Atlas table copies carry no coordinates, so each record is placed by fixed rules: at the town named in its address or name (GeoNames; U.S. Census Gazetteer 2023), or, in the United States, in the county it gives. No geocoding service is used. A point marks the town, not the site. 61.7% of Atlas records have a town point, 16.0% a U.S. county and 22.3% no place below the country. Where the town comes from the record name, it matched the town of the address in 86.9% of 2,230 test records. An independent AI session checked a random sample of 870 places; the rules were corrected after the check and the layers rebuilt. Power is given as each source gives it: Epoch AI's current IT power in MW, and the Atlas's size class, whose basis the Atlas does not state. Records are not merged across sources. For each Epoch AI site, checks.csv records whether the Atlas lists the same site: 63 found, 2 not found, 29 not checked. A record in Crimea carries both the country the Atlas gives and the state in control, as recorded in abf-boundaries v0.2.0; the Atlas entry Somaliland is counted under Somalia. These follow the boundary frame and are not positions of the project. Files: GeoParquet, gzipped GeoJSON and CSV per layer; a meta.json file per layer with its sources, licenses, editions, known gaps and checks; the Atlas table copies and the Epoch AI file as used. License: CC BY 4.0. Please also credit the Atlas of Data Center Politics and Epoch AI as given in each layer's metadata. Known issue in version 0.1.0, found after publication. The files of this record do not change. The map tiles (PMTiles) published with this version on data.aibuildoutfrontier.org for the project website, which are not part of this record, show only part of the Atlas of Data Center Politics points at small scales: at zoom level 8, 1,097 of the 6,087 records with a point. The data files in this record are complete and correct. Version 0.2.0 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23645541) keeps the same data, corrects the map tiles and adds counts of the Atlas records by place and by U.S. county. On the website the Atlas records are now shown through the count by place.
