Non-biting midges of the genus Chironomus are a model organism to answer questions on the molecular evolution of genes and genome organisation. In ecotoxicology, the aquatic chironomid larvae are used as an indicator for environmental pollution. Here we provide the draft genome of the most commonly studied species, Chironomus riparius (Laufer).
