River unions are trade unions bringing together the competent local authorities geographically on a watershed or a significant part of it, the purpose of which is to carry out all actions concerning the management of a river and its tributaries (restoration of the environment, maintenance work in the framework of group operations, animation of local policy on this subject, sanitation, etc.). Their objective is coherent management at the level of the hydrographic network, in particular to ensure the free flow of water while preserving biodiversity, respecting water uses and rights while transcribing national and European guidelines on the ground. Depending on their statutes, some unions are empowered to assist riparian waterway owners in their maintenance obligations.
