This DATASET is compiling experimental characterization and bioactivity data that was produced during the project. In the project we at introducing a novel and translatable antibiotic-free implant coating approach, focusing on directed assembly of non-lamellar lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) nanostructures on implants for prevention of initial bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on implants using omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. In addition to static small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) characterization investigations, in vitro studies were conducted for evaluating the antibacterial properties of the LLC coatings against the gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. This study describes the first antibiotic-free coatings with nanostructural architectures and inherent antibacterial activities for orthopedic implants.
