The Clash Between Philosophy and The Shining (Stanley Kubrick)

Abstract In this methodological reflection, I re-examine the relationship between philosophy and cinema by confronting Stanley Kubrick's The Shining not as an illustration of pre-existing theories, nor as an ineffable object beyond conceptual reach, but as a structural touchstone that exposes the inherent limits of philosophical interpretation. I argue that the Overlook Hotel, through its peculiar spatial and temporal architecture, resists reduction to any single hermeneutic framework, thereby forcing philosophical inquiry into a posture of epistemic humility. By juxtaposing five conflicting philosophical lenses—Heidegger's analytics of dwelling, Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of embodied perception, Bachelard's poetics of intimate space, Ricoeur's theory of narrative identity, and Foucault's concept of heterotopia—I demonstrate that each illuminates a distinct facet of the film while simultaneously failing before its enigmatic core. This repeated failure, however, is not a weakness of philosophical thought but a methodological gain, yielding what I term a "hermeneutics of mutual vulnerability." In this approach, cinema is no longer treated as a passive object to be explained, nor as a sacred mystery to be revered in silence; it becomes an active interlocutor that challenges the very conditions of interpretative authority. The paper thus charts a third path between illustrationism and transcendentalism, proposing that philosophy's highest rigor may lie precisely in its capacity to suspend definitive judgment, register irreducible tensions, and dwell productively within the opacity of the artwork. Ultimately, this exercise serves as a practical enactment of my broader theoretical concerns regarding endurance under structural instability, translating abstract notions of suspension, leakage, and resilience into the concrete and vivid domain of cinematic experience.
