On behalf of the Ministry of Climate Protection, the Federal Environment Agency has modelled how the goal of climate neutrality in the transport sector can be achieved by the year 2040. For the Transition Mobility scenario, the experts have identified core measures and analysed how pronounced they must be in order to sufficiently reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the use of energy. The impact of the individual measures, from fleet electrification to increased fuel costs to spatial planning, was calculated using a land use and transport model (MARS) and an emission model (NEMO). The scenario shows that the climate and energy targets can be achieved in the transport sector by 2040. However, this requires rapid implementation of a comprehensive package of measures, changes in EU law and the transformation of the economy and society.
