Genomic technologies have significantly advanced our understanding of the composition and diversity of host-associated microbial populations. However, their spatial organization and functional interactions have been more challenging to study. In this study we both applied the 16S gene target sequencing, a metagenomic analysis and an approach to study the fine-scale spatial structure of the intestinal microbiota in situ, in mice with different diets to examine the effect of polysaccharide privation on microbiota composition.
